A Water Story

Ignoring The Medical Facts

In April 2014 Flint Michigan switch from Detroit water supply to save money. Immediately there were complaints about the smell and taste. In February 2015 the first test was conducted and showed high levels of lead and other contaminants. Officials insisted the water was safe, ignoring the medical facts that people especially children and seniors were being poisoned by this water. Some residents with sick children took it upon themselves to contact a water expert from Virginia Tech University to test their water at home. City and State Officials continuously denied that the water was safe to drink in spite of all the evidence around them.

A large number of patients entering hospitals with high levels of lead in their blood raised concern for pediatricians. They requested (Surveillance Data) from the water test results report, and were denied access to data. This prompt doctors to conduct testing on the water themselves; along with teaming up with Virginia Tech University Experts and concluded that the lead content was 13,000 (ppb) parts per billion, along with disease-causing bacteria and other contaminants. The Federal Threshold is around 11,000-12,000 (ppb) parts per billion. One expert claim that “an 8 oz glass of water could send a small child to a hospital emergency room”.

The Poisoning of An American City

City Officials responding to the doctors and University researchers stated that “unfortunate researchers splicing and dicing numbers causing near-hysteria,” even though the State building where the City Officials worked, had a water filtration system installed.  General Motor’s- stop using Flints water because of the corroding engine parts. When Time Magazine releases the title, ( The Poisoning Of An American City), the pressure of the community backed by prestigious researchers and Doctors, the City, and State Officials finally conceded to what they knew all along that Flint Michigan water was not safe to drink period.  The problem was caused when Flint made the switch from Detroit water supply to Flint River. A vital chemical required by federal law to control the corrosion in old lead pipes was not used.

The City of Flint Michigan in order to save money violated Federal Law at the expense of lives in the community, then to top it off, they denied that the water was toxic when knowing their own surveillance data showed harmful contaminants. This is why they refused to show anyone the results until the Doctors and researchers conducted their own tests. As a result, they were ridiculed by the City Officials claiming their discoveries were inaccurate or false data. Flint has now reconnected with Detroit water supply and the governor apologize to the community for the corruption that took place. 15 former City and State Officials were indicted in the Flint water crisis. Some of the charges include manslaughter, a 15-year felony, obstruction of justice, a 5-year felony, false pretenses, and conspiracy, both 20-year felonies.

Sworn To Protect

Three years after the indictments none of the City Officials that were charged went to jail. The public baffle and outraged that City Officials would authorize approval of drinking poisoned water, while sworn in to protect the community, suffered no consequences for their corrupt actions. Half a Billion dollars of Federal, State funds, and private donations were used to replace all City lead pipes, free bottled water to residents, a showcase of preschools were built along with a registry to monitor the health of anyone affected. The State of Michigan then ended the distribution of bottled water to residents; Their justification was that scientific data now proves the water system is stable, and lead levels in the water there have not exceeded federal limits for about two years, although advising people to use water filters. Ask yourself this question, can you trust your City Officials to clean your water? Or should you take the responsibility yourself?
